3-Hour Experiment: Skyscanner vs Google Flights vs Direct Airline Booking

If you’re booking an international flight, you’ve probably wondered:

Should I use Skyscanner?
Is Google Flights better?
Or should I book directly with the airline?

Instead of guessing, I ran a 3-hour real-time experiment comparing all three platforms for the same route.

Here’s what happened.

Experiment Setup

Route: Mumbai (BOM) → London (LHR)
Travel Dates: 12 Oct – 22 Oct
Passengers: 1 Adult
Cabin: Economy
Time Tested: 6 PM – 9 PM IST (same evening)
Goal: Find the cheapest reliable booking option

I used identical filters across all platforms:

  • Economy class
  • Max 1 stop
  • Layover under 3 hours
  • No overnight layovers

Round 1: Skyscanner

Initial lowest fare shown:
👉 ₹49,200

Airline: Middle East carrier (1-stop, 2h 10m layover)

After clicking through to OTA partner:
Final payable fare: ₹49,850

Difference: ₹650 added as service fee.

Observation:

  • Very clean comparison view
  • Easy to spot cheapest combination
  • Multiple OTA options

Round 2: Google Flights

Initial lowest fare shown:
👉 ₹50,100

Same airline and timing as Skyscanner’s cheapest option.

Google redirected me to:

  • Airline website
  • 2 OTAs

Final airline website price: ₹50,400

Observation:

  • Strong calendar view
  • Very fast filtering
  • Often pushes airline-direct bookings

Round 3: Direct Airline Website

I manually searched the same airline website.

Displayed price:
👉 ₹51,200

After taxes:
₹51,450

Observation:

  • Slightly higher base fare
  • Better seat selection clarity
  • More flexible change policy details

Final Comparison Summary

PlatformInitial PriceFinal PayableDifference
Skyscanner₹49,200₹49,850+₹650
Google Flights₹50,100₹50,400+₹300
Airline Direct₹51,200₹51,450+₹250

Lowest overall option: Skyscanner (via OTA)

Total difference between cheapest and most expensive: ₹1,600

What I Learned After 3 Hours

1️⃣ Skyscanner Found the Lowest Raw Price

Especially when OTAs were involved.

2️⃣ Google Flights Was Best for Date Flexibility

The calendar view made spotting cheaper departure days easier.

3️⃣ Airline Website Was Slightly More Expensive

But offered:

  • Easier refund rules
  • Loyalty points
  • Direct customer support

Hidden Factors Most People Ignore

Price is not everything.

You should also compare:

  • Refund policy
  • Date change fees
  • Baggage allowance
  • Customer support
  • Payment method fees

Sometimes paying ₹800 more directly to the airline is worth it for flexibility.

When Each Platform Is Best

Use Skyscanner If:

  • You want the absolute cheapest fare
  • You’re flexible
  • You’re comfortable booking via OTA

Use Google Flights If:

  • You want fast comparison
  • You’re still exploring dates
  • You prefer airline-direct options

Book Direct If:

  • You have loyalty membership
  • You need flexible cancellation
  • Price difference is small

The Real Winner?

If your priority is lowest price:
Skyscanner slightly wins.

If your priority is flexibility and convenience:
Google Flights is smoother.

If your priority is security and flexibility:
Airline direct booking makes sense.

The Bigger Insight

The price difference across platforms wasn’t huge.

The real savings came from:

  • Adjusting dates
  • Accepting short layovers
  • Booking in the right window

Platform choice matters less than booking strategy.
