When planning a trip, one question every traveler asks is:
“Should I book my international flights 3 months in advance, or can I wait a few weeks before departure?”
To find out, I conducted a real-world experiment comparing fares booked 12 weeks vs 6 weeks before departure. Here’s what I discovered.
Experiment Setup
Route: Delhi (DEL) → London (LHR)
Travel Dates: 12–22 September 2026
Cabin: Economy
Passenger: 1 Adult
Filters: Max 1 stop, layovers <3 hours
I tracked Skyscanner & direct airline fares at two points:
- 12 weeks before departure
- 6 weeks before departure
I then compared the price difference and analyzed patterns.
Step 1: Prices 12 Weeks in Advance
| Airline | Base Fare (₹) | Total Payable (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| Airline A | 47,800 | 48,500 |
| Airline B | 48,200 | 49,000 |
| Airline C | 46,900 | 47,700 |
💡 Observation: Fares were relatively stable across airlines, with average ~₹48,400.
Step 2: Prices 6 Weeks in Advance
| Airline | Base Fare (₹) | Total Payable (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| Airline A | 50,200 | 50,900 |
| Airline B | 49,800 | 50,600 |
| Airline C | 51,000 | 51,700 |
💡 Observation: Fares increased by ₹2,000–₹3,000 on average.
Step 3: Comparing Savings
| Booking Window | Average Total Fare (₹) | Savings vs Later Booking |
|---|---|---|
| 12 Weeks | 48,400 | — |
| 6 Weeks | 51,100 | ₹2,700 |
Insight: Booking 12 weeks ahead saved ~₹2,700 per ticket, significant for solo travelers — and even more for families.
Step 4: Key Observations
1️⃣ Early Booking Wins
- Booking 12 weeks in advance consistently provided lower fares across all airlines.
2️⃣ Airline Differences
- Budget carriers sometimes fluctuate more in price closer to departure.
- Full-service airlines tend to increase gradually as seats fill up.
3️⃣ Peak Season Impact
- If your travel falls in peak months (June–August, December), early booking is essential.
- Waiting too long can cost ₹5,000+ extra per ticket.
4️⃣ Flexible Travelers Can Still Find Deals
- Occasionally, airlines offer flash sales 4–6 weeks before travel, but these are unpredictable and require constant monitoring.
Step 5: Practical Takeaways
- Book international flights 10–12 weeks in advance for optimal fares.
- Use price alerts (Skyscanner/Google Flights) to track drops.
- Avoid waiting until 6 weeks if traveling during peak season.
- For off-season travel, mid-range booking can work — but early is safer.
